Workshop Title: Hands-On Parts Per Million PPM Monitoring and Benchmarking your Process
Duration: One Day on Site Workshop

Workshop Introduction:
There are no easy methods for companies to compare their manufacturing yields with other similar businesses. A common question asked by many companies is "How does my process compare with other companies in terms of yield"? The information does not exist or is not easily available to small and medium volume companies. The lack of process yield data for company comparison is a problem which exists and should openly be available to the industry. The SMART Group PPM Defect Monitoring Project will be illustrated along with the type of data that is being made available to benefit the industry.
Nepcon 2002 - PPM - Monitoring Workshops
The most commonly used method of illustrating yield is Part Per Million (PPM) Defective. This provides a measure of the defect level against a process stage or a specific product compared against a known number of opportunities for defects to occur. There are IPC and IEC documents and procedures which do exist to monitor a process. This workshop will show how to implement a defect monitoring project in your company and the yield data produced.
Topics to include:
  • Why monitor your process for yield?
  • PPM, DPM or DPU
  • Collecting Inspection Data
  • Screen Printing
    Inspection Criteria
    Common Defects
  • Component Placement
    IPC Inspection Criteria
  • Reflow Soldering
    IPC Inspection Criteria
  • Wave Soldering
  • Collaborative Data Collection
    Assembly Types
    Collecting Data by E-Commerce
  • Defect Collection Case Studies
    Small, Medium and Large Companies
This workshop will include a Interactive CD-ROM "Surface Mount Conventional Inspection and Quality Control" worth over £100.

The course is suited to all those involved in the use of modern assembly including stencil printing, placement, reflow and wave soldering processes. For those engineers tasked with the introduction of quality improvement projects or implementing new process techniques. For quality engineers undertaking process control measurement on systems and supervisors responsible on a day-to-day basis to improve yields.
