Based on the following question here are responses/quotes received from electronics companies on the on the SMART Group PPM Monitoring Project

"How would your company benefit from having an industry average Parts Per Million (PPM) defect level for each manufacturing process on a monthly basis?"

What the companies had to say

  • Benchmarking our processes has been something we have considered for a while now but we have so far been unable to locate data (common) to benchmark against. This would be very interesting to us
  • Since we are currently looking at re-starting our quality forum the PPM data would give us ideal "stake in the ground" aims. Ongoing we would be able to get an impression of our company's standing overall
  • It would allow us to compare ourselves to others. I am interested in the fact you include small volume companies as we fall into this category
  • Selecting the best suppliers on quality.
  • As we already have ISO 9002 and will shortly achieve ISO 9000:2000 as well as ATEX Directive approval for IS Manufacturing this data would allow us to work at improving our process control and improving yield
  • It would help identify areas/processes where we were below average and help direct improvement projects
  • We presently measure various process parameters (in PPM) but can only determine adverse or positive deviations - we do not know how good we are. To meet ISO 9000 requirements we need to continually improve
  • As we are embarking on a continuous improvement project the information received would allow our progress to be benchmarked with other organisations
  • We would use it to verify (or not) our belief that we have a high yield, high quality process. If not, then we can measure improvements and benchmark our success.
  • We operate a system of continuous improvement. Without this sort of data we operate in a "shell" we do not know how good, or poor, we are.
  • We are currently implementing a project whereby we are attempting to measure our process stability using PPM (as per IPC recommendations) and would therefore be extremely interested in knowing whether the PPM we are reporting are actually of any order that is comparable to other companies.
  • To benchmark our processes against some form of industry standard. Also there could be a cross information forum to share non-sensitive information.
  • Greatly. Good to know if we are really "in control". Have offered to take part in data collection etc.
  • Our company core business is component attrition associated with component placement. Detail of this nature will help us quantify our markets for large, medium and small companies.
  • Compare our process performance with industry best in class.

Additional Comments from Email responses:

  • I would be prepared to make our site available for a SMART SMT audit . While there is always the issue of confidentiality and the threat of our competitors gaining knowledge of our processes, with careful management this could be minimised - we would need to work closely with you on this. I would also be prepared to contribute monthly un-named yield data.
  • The PPM data would allow me to "compare apples with apples" in relation to yields from similar manufacturers in the electronic sector. I would like to get a better idea of where we stand in terms of industry best practices and yields.
  • I can currently find no data to benchmark my plant against. There is a lot of subjective opinion regarding attainable yields from the SMT process - the availability of neutral industry wide data would remove the subjective element and allow for true benchmarking. This would then allow us to focus our efforts towards reaching "best in class levels" rather than reacting to subjective input and wasting effort into trying to attain the unattainable.
  • The availability of rolling monthly data would also allow me to see trends in improved capability industry-wide and to plan and react accordingly.
  • We would be interested in knowing more about your proposal to compare the performance of different companies processes and being involved with the project.
  • We currently have little idea how we fair against other companies which makes it more difficult in justifying capital expenditure for process improvement as we do not have a clear idea of what results are actually achievable.
  • As a company, we are looking into finding benchmark process capabilities for both our wave solder (SMD) and SMD placement and printing systems.
